She currently teaches at Melbourne University and Presbyterian Ladies College and is an examiner for the flute for the AMEB.

Johanna has had an extensive performing career including principal flute with the State Concert Orchestra (Victoria) and Ensemble Zauberflöte. She has performed with a wide range of chamber ensembles and theatre orchestras (including the Loyola, Babbira, and Savoy Opera Companies in Melbourne). In 2007, she recorded her own flute concerto, Unspoken Dialogues, with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She currently works as a freelance performer focussing on contemporary repertoire and the works of composers in the Asian and Melbourne Composers’ Leagues as well as performing in chamber ensembles including Austral Indigo and the Acacia Gold Collective.

Her compositions have been performed by internationally-renowned performers in Australia and overseas including in South Africa, Malta, Israel, Italy, Singapore, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, and the US. Her recordings appear on the Tall Poppies, Move Records, and Navona (USA) labels. Her music is published by Allans, Reed Music, and Lyrebird Press, and her research is also widely published by Cambridge Scholars Press (among others) and in scholarly journals such as Australasian Music Research. Her composition Threads Through Time will have its Sydney premiere at Flute Tree with Johanna performing with Austral Indigo on 29 June. Tickets are available from the Flute Tree.

"For me, the flute inspires a natural connection with the harmony of nature – earth, water, rain and sun. I love working with everything from the Baroque to Contemporary, teaching and performing these sometimes vastly different techniques for over 30 years. The underlying common thread through all these styles is the always the raw power of nature.” Johanna Selleck
