The Changing Flute

With the invention of the modern Boehm flute in the mid 1800s so the sounds and facility available to the flute player of the day changed.

Flute Tree present a concert of change; flute solos and duets from Hotteterre, Philidor, CPE Bach, Kuhlau, and Debussy, showcasing the stylistic and musical changes, as the flute transitioned through baraoque, classical to modern Boehm flutes.

Megan Lang

Born in Tasmania, Megan completed a Bachelor of Music in flute performance at the University of Adelaide in 1993. Subsequently moving to Frankfurt a.M., Germany, to continue her studies at the Hochschule für Musik u.d.Kunst, she enjoyed many years of playing in professional orchestras, primarily in the opera orchestra of the theatre in Mönchengladbach, as well as teaching flute, chamber music, and English. After taking up Baroque Flute with Michael Schmidt-Casdorff, Karl Kaiser, and Linde Brunmayr-Tutz in Germany, Megan returned to Australia in 2005 and completed a Masters degree in Period Flutes with Hans-Dieter Michatz and Melissa Farrow. She has since appeared with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and the Australian Classical Era Orchestra. One of the founding members of the Sydney Early Music Ensemble, Megan is a devoted chamber musician and regularly performs in small ensembles.

Megan is currently a tutor in the Musicology department at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and regularly appears as a guest lecturer for the Conservatorium Open Academy. She is also a published writer, including two German translations. Megan is currently a PhD candidate, and has a special interest in Music Psychology, investigating the role of concepts of the Self in performance.

 

 

Melissa Farrow is a leading specialist in early flutes and recorder in Australia, also performing on 'modern' flute.
Melissa moved from NZ to Australia to study flute , recorder and traverso at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The following year she won a Nuffic scholarship for Post-Graduate studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and a special invitation to study at the prestigious Tweede Fase for 2 years.
As a student, she won many solo and chamber music competitions and performed Neilsen Concerto with the NZSO , then invited to play Ritchie and Carl Stamitz Concertos with the Dunedin Sinfonia. In Amsterdam she performed in a prestigious contemporary recorder festival with modern flute at 'De Ijsbreker'.
Melissa is Principal Flute with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Australian Brandenburg Soloists and Orchestra of the Antipodes. She has played regularly with Sydney Philharmonia , Sinfonia Australis, Salut! , AOBO and on eight keyed flute with ACO. She recently formed an ensemble on original instruments; Lumiere Baroque which premieres with its first Sydney performance June 2010.
